· Reports of missing women and girls rise in Ciudad Juárez
According to a preliminary database drawn up by Justicia para Nuestras Hijas, last year at least 364 women were murdered in the state of Chihuahua, that works out as approximately one Femicide every day.
Due to a lack of an official database offering a single public and trustworthy source of information about the murder and disappearance of women and girls in Chihuahua State, this civil association builds their own via the revision of newspaper sources and requests for information under Mexico’s freedom of information act in order to monitor and publicize this problem.
The number of women murdered in Chihuahua state remains very much above the national average, and the dimensions of the problem are still worrying, despite the fact that there appears to have been a fall in the murder rate in general in Chihuahua state (the rate includes murders of women in 2011).
At the same time, there has been in a significant increase in reports of missing women, according to information that has been obtained from the state attorney-general’s office (Fiscalía General del Estado de Chihuahua)
In 2011, at least reports of missing women and girls were logged in Chihuahua State, all of which are still outstanding. Ciudad Juárez continues to be the place where most reports are made, with 50 in the last year.
