· The number of murders of women in Chihuahua has increased in comparison to last year
Ciudad Juárez continues to top the list of murders of women in the state.
The incidence of femicide continues to increase in Chihuahua, perpetuating the dangerous and vulnerable situation faced by women and girls of the state.
In the first four months of the year (from 1 January to 30 April 2011) the organization Justice for our Daughters documented 140 murders of women in the state of Chihuahua, while in the same period of 2010 the figure was 122 murders, representing an increase of 13%.
The premeditated murders against women continue to display the same characteristics as in previous months in that the majority of these occurred in Ciudad Juárez. Of the 140 murders committed in this period, 88, or 63%, occurred in this border city.
The murders of women continue to increase despite the implementation of the “We are all Juárez” Plan and the presence of police and soldiers in the streets. If the rest of 2011 continues at the same rate the total number of murders for this year will overtake the highest figure registered yet, which was 446 murders registered last year in 2010.
According to the analysis undertaken by Justice for our Daughters, the majority of women were killed with firearms. The names of these women and girls can be found in the database of Justice for our Daughters which can be consulted on its website, under the section “femicides”.
Faced with this situation, civil society organizations continue their efforts to put an end to this issue as well as demanding prompt and effective investigations so that the Mexican State complies with its obligations to identify and punish those responsible for these crimes.
